OB/GYN encompasses two distinct areas of study: obstetrics and gynecology. Obstetrics is the field of medicine that deals with pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. It involves monitoring the health of the mother and developing fetus throughout pregnancy, managing labor and delivery, and providing care to both the mother and baby after birth.
Gynecology, on the other hand, is the branch of medicine that focuses on the female reproductive system outside of pregnancy. It involves the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as menstrual disorders, infertility, and conditions affecting the ovaries, uterus, and cervix.
During a typical OB/GYN exam, a healthcare provider will perform a pelvic exam, which involves an internal and external examination of the reproductive organs. They may also perform a Pap test, which is used to screen for cervical cancer. Additionally, OB/GYNs may perform ultrasound exams to visualize the uterus and ovaries and diagnose conditions such as fibroids and ovarian cysts.
OB/GYN is a crucial part of women's healthcare, and routine exams are recommended for all women, regardless of age or reproductive status. Regular OB/GYN exams can help detect and prevent a wide range of conditions, from sexually transmitted infections to cervical cancer.
